In the mid-thirteenth century, North German seafaring merchants joined together to form the Hanseatic League as a way to pursue their shared economic interests. For more than 400 years, the Hanseatic League has helped to shape the economy, trade, and politics in the North and Baltic Seas. Long-distance trade made important Hanseatic cities prosperous at the time and formed a self-confident merchant community. The Hanseatic days were established in 1356. As a port to the world, Hamburg has always been a center for new ideas and products, so it comes as no surprise that licorice came to Germany for the first time, so that it would end in a wonderful candy.
Our Hanseatic Pepper doesn't contain any pepper at all, but it is strong black licorice with a hollow core and a powerful salmiak / licorice powder filling.
Finally, we put an extra pinch of salmiak powder in every jar so that the candy contains a little "licorice dust" on the outside.
Whether the Turkish pebar / pepper that is so popular in Denmark and Finland descends from the Nothern German town of Hamburg original - well, there will never be a consensus in the Hanseatic League.
The candy has always come without individual packaging in the old days you get it even per piece and since it contains no chemical additives, it is likely that the candies will stick together. This is perfectly normal and a firm nudge on the jar will help separate the delicacy from one for easier eating.
Ingredients:
Sugar, glucose syrup, licorice extract (3%), ammonium chloride (2.7%), table salt, coloring, flavors.
